In the nature of League of Legends, this is a team-oriented game, and that sometimes exposes one to all kinds of personalities-one of which might be toxic or disrupting, especially in ranked matches.
Riot Games, however, has been trying to reduce that negative cultural trend in the game. In patch 14.9, they introduced some behavioral updates that rewarded players who had to play with disruptive teammates with things like LP consolation, protection for autofill, boosts in XP, and rerolls in ARAM, while punishing truly toxic behavior much harder, which overall improved the ranked experience.
To continue reinforcing the rewards for positive behavior, Riot implemented the Honor system, which lets a player honor a teammate at the end of the match. Such a system materially rewards players with key fragments, keys, emotes, and even champion skins, making it very integral to the social part of the game.
Among the major changes to the new Honor system would be that it reintroduces the capability to honor opponents, which was taken away since 2017.
Riot took it away initially to accentuate teamwork, so honoring a teammate would be more important. However, this then made players end up honoring only the best-performing teammate and left the rest of the good contributors-who were contributing positively in other ways, such as strategizing or simply being friendly-out in the cold.
The revised Honor system will re-enable the honor of opponents. In addition, this includes honoring multiple players within one lobby, further increasing the possibilities of rewarding players for good behavior.
These changes, among several improved rewards-essentially at lower Honor levels-shall work magic in enhancing the overall experience of the players. Though the exact time for releasing this rework is not specified, it is soon to come.
