Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment acquired Alan Wake publishing rights from Microsoft it's been officially announced by the company. Remedy now own both IP and publishing rights and can potentially start working on Alan Wake sequel.
Remedy Entertainment, the creators of many hit games such as Max Payne, Quantum Break and Alan Wake have announced that a deal has been struck with tech giant Microsoft for the acquisition of the publishing rights for Xbox 360 cult horror title Alan Wake.
Finnish studio already own the IP rights for the title, but according to the announcement, they can now also publish any potential Alan Wake games. This is huge news for all Alan Wake fans who have been pleading for a sequel for many years.
Remedy will now, hopefully, start working on a new Alan Wake game, which is something they already did in the past, but unfortunately, things didn't go well and the game was eventually cancelled.
However, things are a lot different now that Remedy have everything in their own hands so it wouldn't surprise us to see new Alan Wake game in development after the studio wrap up their upcoming supernatural action-adventure Control.
Furthermore, the publishing rights comes alongside a one-time royalty payment of €2.5 million from Microsoft for previously released titles. These funds will go straight into Remedy's budget for games development.
"For its first half-year period of 2019, Remedy Entertainment Plc records approximately 2.5 million euros of royalties from previously released games as one-time income," it's written in the announcement.
Alan Wake originally released in 2010 and we remember it as one of the best horror games of that year. A spinoff named Alan Wake American Nightmare was released in 2012, but ultimately, it failed to capture the atmosphere of the original.
Alan Wake is exclusive for PC and Xbox platforms, and it will be interesting to see if Remedy publish the game on other platforms now that they own the rights.
