Last week, we got word that Rainbow Six Siege's latest DLC pack, Operation Blood Orchid, will be available to season pass holders on 29 August for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Everyone else hoping to buy the DLC with real-life cash or in-game coins will have to wait a week.
Operation Blood Orchid will come with a new map and three new Operators. Two Operators are from Hong Kong and one is from Poland. Hong Kong is, incidentally, the location of the new map, and it doesn't get prettier or, in fact, creepier than this: it's an abandoned theme park appropriated by a criminal organisation and turned into a "nest for narcotic manufacture". This is why we can't have nice things.
Ubisoft
Rainbow Six’s Assistant Art Director Karine Letourneau and Production Manager Frédérique Roussel talked about their inspirations for the new map: "The S.D.U. is famous for being able to operate in Hong Kong’s diverse and challenging urban environment. Their unit is ready to intervene on an array of different terrains, from densely populated shopping districts to steep mountains," said Letourneau.
They came up with a long abandoned theme park that is already being reclaimed by grass and vines. "This superimposition will in turn influence gameplay," explained Roussel. "Since the spaces have been reconfigured by squatters and an overgrown nature, the architecture is often misleading."
Ubisoft
The two have also promised a more "crowded aesthetic" in the form of "wildly different patterns packed in the same corner" where a "smooth succession of colours and shapes" should be. The map will have a daytime and a nighttime ambiance each with its own charm.
The reason Team Rainbow is there: it's take a narco boss to prison day. But seriously: "the S.D.U. has identified this perimeter as being used as a criminal organisation’s nest for narcotic manufacture. After establishing a connection with the Hong Kong Triad, two Flying Tigers are chosen to lead a lethal raid in Theme Park."
