The Sony PS5 exclusive action-adventure Stellar Blade is set to be released on 26th April 2024. Eve, the protagonist of this title is Earth's last hope against the Naytiba invasion. Shift Up has designed her based on the Korean model Jae-Eun as they wanted to create the most attractive-looking hero possible.
The developers even stated that they have paid special attention to her back's details and design as players will be looking at Eve from behind.
While it's true that Stellar Blade has highly suggestive elements, this is not the only reason for such a high rating. Korean rating board found other mature elements in the game's story that are not suitable for younger players.
Why was Stellar Blade given an 18+ Rating?
It's worth noting that Korea is pretty much the only country to rate Stellar Blade at the moment, so the rating might not be the same in your country, especially if you live in the west where PEGI and ESRB rate games. Both boards are very strict with suggestive themes.
With over 30 costumes to collect throughout the game, Eve's costumes are so revealing that they are teetering on the edge of nudity. But that is not the only reason behind them receiving an 18+ rating. So here are some other reasons behind this rating:
- There is excessive violence.
- Presence of mature graphic elements like red blood.
- Character mutilations and dismembering.
What does this mean for Stellar Blade?
Having an 18+ rating is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, according to the reactions of fans on social media, they are taking this as a positive thing. Because at the end of the day violence, vulgarity, and suggestive materials are all perceived by fans differently.
What one group finds "excessive" or "over-the-top" can be perceived as "normal" or "regular" by another as these matters are extremely subjective. In the end, games like Stellar Blade tell a story, and sometimes to portray this properly developers need to add mature themes and violence.
Since Stellar Blade hasn't been released yet, whether or not the mature elements and violence were necessary or not is yet to be determined.
