Path of Exile 2 receives its druid class next week, introducing shapeshifting mechanics alongside substantial balance changes and the new Fate of the Vaal league. Grinding Gear Games will launch the expansion on December 12 across PC, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic Games Store, with a free weekend for new players.
Three deadly forms and two ascendancies
The druid wields Talismans to shapeshift into three animal forms. Wolf form channels lunar energy for cold damage and freeze effects whilst summoning minion packs. Bear builds Rage for devastating attacks amplified through roaring. Wyvern soars above battlefields, feeding on corpses to empower lightning and fire abilities.
Human form commands earth and storm magic and can erupt volcanoes, bindi roots, and thunder strikes. The new Spell Totem skill automatically casts chosen spells using endurance or power charges generated through shapeshifting abilities.
Two ascendancy paths diverge dramatically. Shaman consumes Rage for catastrophic spell effects and draws power from Runes and Idols with exclusive modifiers, triggering cascading elemental storms. Oracle manipulates time through Foresight, receiving premonitions of future skill use for massive damage bonuses when following visions correctly.
Fate of the Vaal league and temple crafting
The new league mechanic centres on customisable temple construction. Players defeat corrupted Vaal beacons to unlock temple rooms, assembling six chambers into personalised layouts. Room placement matters, meaning that positioning Commanders near Garrisons increases difficulty and rewards. Destabilised rooms require replacement each run, gradually expanding temple complexity.
Vaal crafting mechanisms enable powerful corruption effects. Juatalotli's Triumph alters corrupted Vaal uniques, whilst other machines corrupt tablets, distort soul cores, or salvage socketables from equipment with varying success rates.
Atziri returns as the pinnacle boss
Queen Atziri joins as the expansion's pinnacle encounter after defeating her devoted Royal Architect, Xipocado. Her signature drop, Atziri's Rule staff, elevates corrupted gems and spawns battlefield mirrors that split projectiles into chaining novas.
Massive rebalancing and performance improvements
Over 30 new support gems arrive alongside 250 additional passive skills. Ninety active skills received balance adjustments, whilst nearly all existing ascendancies got updates. Monster density in high-tier maps now converts to proportional rewards—40% more drops and experience rather than 40% more enemies.
Performance improvements promise at least 25% frame rate increases with reduced spikes, particularly noticeable on consoles. Delirium fog visual effects have been significantly toned down for combat clarity.
The Last of the Druids launches December 12 with a free weekend running through December 15. The Abyssals mechanic transitions to permanent endgame content with Atlas passives.
