Capcom have dropped a new overview trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and it's a proper showcase of everything the game has going for it - gorgeous visuals, fluid combat, and a 17th century Edo-period Kyoto that looks like an absolute joy to explore. Why isn't everyone talking about this?

Onimusha is back, and if this new trailer is anything to go by, it might be one of the most visually impressive games of 2026. Capcom have released an overview trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword that covers the world, the story, characters, and most importantly the combat.

The setup is quite simple, at least that's my conclusion from this three-minute video. Our protagonist Musashi is struck down in battle, only to find himself revived with an Oni Gauntlet fused to his arm. Armed with these new supernatural abilities, his goal becomes clear - rise up against the monstrous Genma ravaging the land. Classic revenge-and-redemption territory, told against the backdrop of 17th century Edo-period Kyoto.

The environments shown in the trailer range from misty forest paths to crumbling feudal architecture, and every single frame looks painterly and gorgeous.

One small observation - Musashi comes out with what sounds distinctly like an Australian or perhaps broadly British turn of phrase at one point, telling an opponent, "Let's see your best then, aye?" Not exactly what you'd expect from a 17th century samurai, but we'll allow it. The man has a demon arm. He can talk however he likes.

Combos, parry and very fluid combat animations

This is where the trailer really shines. The combat in Way of the Sword looks superbly smooth - fluid animations, snappy combos, parries, and special abilities that can be unleashed with real visual impact.

The boss encounters shown look suitably enormous and intimidating, with one colossal Genma creature towering over a candlelit arena in a shot that wouldn't look out of place in a From Software title. The production values here seem excellent, and it really feels that Capcom have stepped up its game recently with animations, mocap and cinematics. Resident Evil Requiem is a prime example of that.

Why isn't anyone talking about this?

Honestly, it's probably the release date problem. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is slated for 2026, but no firm date has been given - and in a year already packed with heavy hitters, a vague window makes it easy for a game to get lost in the noise. That's a shame, because based on this trailer, Way of the Sword has every right to be in the same conversation as the year's biggest releases. The visuals, the world, the combat fluidity, it all looks exceptional, really.

Consider this one firmly on the most anticipated list.
