Niantic recently joined forces with augmented reality startup Escher Reality. The two will work on making a persistent, shared AR game world similar to a MMO. The cross platform technology should be available more widely to developers later this year.
Niantic has recently purchased augmented reality startup Escher Reality. The startup builds AR tools for mobile devices, and it will now work with the people from Niantic to grow its platform and support planet-scale AR. This should eventually culminate in players around the word banding together and hunting Pokemon in a shared AR game world similar to an MMO.
"Escher’s technology helps to build persistent, cross platform, multi-user experiences. The addition of the Escher AR technology is incredibly exciting to us at Niantic as it significantly accelerates our work on persistent, shared AR as part of the Niantic real-world application platform. It’s our intention to make our cross-platform AR technology available more widely to developers later this year" said Niantic in a blog post.

Ross Finman, CEO and Diana Hu, CTO from Escher also wrote a post saying: "We're really looking forward to integrating our work on mapping and computer vision technology into Niantic's amazing content and AR platform. The long term vision is to help to bring shared and persistent AR experiences to millions of people around the world, and further realize AR's impact going forward. Ultimately, we share Niantic's goal of enriching people’s experiences by blending the physical and the digital worlds."
In other Pokemon GO news, there are some new outfit styles available to players. In order to get their hands on the new threads, the players must first earn Battle Girl, Jogger, or Fisherman medals, and then go and purchase the desired items.
