Some Infinity Ward developers were worried about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's multiplayer design, which features a lot more open-field combat than previous instalments. The devs were concerned with the lack of cover on some maps.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is just around the corner and Infinity Ward have been offering a ton of new details about the game ever since the official reveal of the multiplayer mode.
In their latest post on Activision's blog, Infinity Ward talked about some of the design decisions, inspirations and overall changes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is set to introduce later this year.
According to the devs, many decision that have been made during the development of Modern Warfare's multiplayer were not easy and even made some designers a bit worried. Some devs couldn't quite cope with Modern Warfare's new open-field combat which should be one of the biggest changes in the series.
"We had one Designer who was really used to playing past Call of Duty games, and he was worried about an area in a particular map; ‘there’s no cover here, how do I deal with a guy in the distance?’ He’d never had to deal with closing distances," Multiplayer Design Directors Geoff Smith said.
Apparently, Infinity Ward wanted to add another layer of realism to Modern Warfare and instead of giving you cover like walls or other objects, they encourage the usage of smoke grenades and other gadgets that can help with the issue.
"So he threw it, but by the time it took him to advance to the next piece of cover, the smoke had disappeared. This was subsequently fixed and now smoke usually remains long enough so your Sprint speed can get you to the next piece of cover," Smith explained.
After many years of the same, close-quarter combat design in Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare is bringing large scale maps, that will support more than 100 players . Of course, the small-sized maps will remain for those who prefer the classic, fast-paced Call of Duty experience.
