The Modern/Infinite Warfare hostage situation seems to have been finally resolved. The remastered version of one of the more reputable games from the Call of Duty series is now available in its standalone final form on Steam.
The Modern Warfare Remastered hostage situation is finally drawing to an end, the only thing that remains to be done is for the game to receive a few price cuts. Fans of the series have been more than vocal about their disapproval of the £30 price tag dangling off the remaster.
Activision has done its best to try and keep potential customers from actually playing the game. The remaster has been gated behind a special edition release of Infinite Warfare, there was a lengthy delay before a standalone version was even announced, and then it seemed like console players would need to own Infinite Warfare to play the standalone anyway. In other words, a mess.
The cherry on top was a £30 price tag, while most players were likely to just be interested in the 5 hour campaign in the first place. That's what you get for iterating on multiplayer.
Anyone interested in the PC standalone of Modern Warfare Remastered can now acquire it without too much of a hassle on Steam. Interestingly enough, that Infinite Warfare special edition goes for £45, and it includes the standalone, meaning that the actual copy of Infinite Warfare would just set you back £15. The hostage situation seems to have been turned on its head.
Activision has tried its best to bypass their PlayStation 4 exclusivity deal for the series by releasing various bits of Call of Duty DLC in the month leading up to the Modern Warfare Remaster PC release. According to recent Steam user reviews for the games, it doesn't look like it worked.
The Call of Duty brand has suffered from a lot of stale and fail for its last few entires, and Activision is now trying to revitalise things with a based on the game series. A lot is riding on Call of Duty: WW2's performance, and it might remake or break the series entirely. We will know more when the next instalment finally releases 3 November 2017.
