According to the MLS announcement, "Some of Major League Soccer's biggest stars, including the LA Galaxy's Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Orlando City's Nani, are joining up with their eMLS counterparts for a five-week, nationally-televised FIFA 20 tournament, debuting on Sunday, April 19 at 7 pm ET on FS1 and FOX Deportes."
With Coca Cola and PlayStation listed as special partners in the eMLS Tournament Special, the fun is pretty much guaranteed.
As for the format, four MLS teams will compete every weekend for four weekends in total. The finals of the eMLS Tournament Special will be held on 17 May 2020, and will feature winners from the aforementioned weekend wars.
Of course, the matches will be played remotely and all the participating MLS teams will have their official representatives. Needless to say - bragging rights are up for the taking.
"In Week 1, the Chicago Fire, represented by Francisco Calvo and pro gamer BITW7 (Enrique Espinoza), face FC Cincinnati, featuring Kendall Waston and back-to-back eMLS League Series champion Fiddle (Gordon Thornsberry). Then, the digital version of ‘El Trafico’ between LA Galaxy and LAFC takes the stage, with Chicharito and 2019 eMLS Cup runner-up Godfather (Giuseppe Guastella) facing Adama Diomande and pro gamer RemiMartinn (Martin Oregel).
If there's any silver lining to be found, and it's always better if there is, it has to be the newfound love between gaming versions of actual sports, which have never been closer to one another.
With the NBA having their own tournament, MLB theirs, and Formula 1 drivers competing in Codemasters' F1 2019, we're hoping that this camaraderie lasts well beyond the epidemiologic situation.
