Riot Games is shaking up MSI 2023 in what is probably an attempt to make the tournament more attractive for the participants.
League of Legends ' second biggest tournament of the year used to feature only the champions from each region but that is changing with MSI 2023 where major regions will have two seeds.
Riot Games announced LCK will get both seeds into the main event while LCS, LEC and LPL will have their second seed in Play-In stage first.
As you can imagine, the total number of teams is going up so major changes to the format are needed, just like with World Championship . Now it's 13 participants instead of 11.
Play-In stage
The Play-In stage will have two groups of four teams playing in the double-elimination bracket, with losers in each round of the upper bracket being knocked down to the lower bracket.
Winners from both sides of the upper bracket will qualify directly for the main event while the winners of the lower brackets will face each other to decide who will go through.
All matches are best-of-three.
Bracket stage
This is where the final eight teams will duke it out in a single double-elimination tournament.
The rules are the same - losing in the upper bracket knocks a team down to the lower bracket while losing there knocks them out of the tournament and the finals will be the top team from the upper bracket against the top team from the lower bracket.
All matches will be best-of-five.
Overall, it's a great change for the fans of LoL esports, who will get to enjoy more matches in total while avoiding the unnecessary ones in group format, if the top teams have already been decided. Now ever match counts.
