In what is surely a devious plan to force Santa to abandon his 30 per cent revenue model, Epic continue with 12 Days of Free Games freebies. This time, it's Hyper Light Drifter, Heart Machine's gorgeous but challenging action RPG.
Granted, Epic are cheating a bit here, as Hyper Light Drifter was already offered in one of their weekly free game offers, but it's well worth checking just in case you missed it.
Hyper Light Drifter is an action RPG brimming with character and colour, but what the pixelated graphics and whimsical appearances aren't telling you is that Heart Machine's game isn't for the faint of heart.
Players control the titular Drifter, who suffers from a mysterious illness. Unlike the forgetful locals, he is capable of using the technology that's laying around, and as you traverse the colourful landscape and battle enemies, you'll be adding new options and weapons.
In fact, this is one of the games whose community ended up embroiled in the debate on what exactly constitutes adequate difficulty. By making Hyper Light Drifter easier to appease one group, the dev awoke another who liked how the game was before.
There were a few more tweaks since then but we can personally attest to it being perfectly tailored to the entire package.
Drawing inspiration from the work of director Hayao Miyazaki, as well as SNES' traditionally silent games, Hyper Light Drifter's protagonist is silent, but the game's audio, courtesy of Disasterpiece, is exquisite.
