As promised, the first of three expansions in 2018 for Blizzard's Hearthstone is just around the corner and it's called The Witchwood. The Witchwood brings 135 new cards as well as a few novel features that look pretty good on paper.

In the announcement video, the developers are obviously taking the mickey out of Blair Witch Project, albeit with a Hearthstone twist. We'd normally point out how this is Blizzard in a nutshell, what with their excellent execution and nonexistent originality but Hearthstone is most certainly an exception on a systems level.

We know The Witchwood is coming mid-April and will feature 135 brand new cards as well as some new card abilities and features. Many of these seem to expand the game's strategic potential as well as appeal, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Hearthstone's Witchwood will have its own campaign, similar to the Kobolds & Catacombs, where players will cleanse the forest by defeating bosses. At the moment, it's unclear whether we're talking about eight bosses and character progression as in Kobolds & Catacombs, but as you can see, players will make that choice themselves.

The devs introduced Rush and Echo as creature features in the new deck. The new Rush feature is basically identical to Charge, but they can't attack heroes on their first turn.

As much as we like Hearthstone's new creature property, Echo, we'll reserve our full opinion until we can assess it in action. However, casting multiple minions from a single card, provided you have the mana of course, sounds mouthwatering.

Blizzard will start revealing all the cards in a Twitch livestream on March 26 but we're bound to dig up some more tidbits by then, so stay tuned.
