343 Industries, developer of Halo Infinite, have written a lengthy blog post on the future of the game, and as things currently stand - we'll have to wait until the next E3 to see gameplay and the rest of the Halo bells and whistles.
Halo Infinite's appearance at E3 2018 was more like a tease, and the trailer was more like a showcase of the Slipspace Engine, 343's new engine built from the ground up to ensure a bright future for the franchise.
343 reiterated their view of Halo Infinite as the franchise's spiritual successor , insisting that they're not just going for a sequel for sequel's sake.
"We are building what we internally refer to as a spiritual reboot, a game with a vision set firmly in the future, but a foundation rooted deeply in the things our team and our fans have fallen in love with – the scope, the scale, the heroism and the moments of spectacle and wonder that brought players together on couches, at basement LAN parties, on Xbox Live and in esports arenas for years", they wrote.
Master Chief, the franchise's big cheese, sports the highest fidelity design so far, also created with next-gen and Xbox Scarlet in mind.
Of course, 343 made sure that Master Chief's rich legacy isn't lost in the design process, despite the new capabilities for "color and texture and detail unavailable to [them] till now."
As for Halo Infinite's narrative, the dev says that the game continues Master Chief's decades-long saga and while there will be important new characters aplenty, he is the centrepiece.
"This story will mark the beginning of a new chapter and challenge for the Chief, but it will also respect and continue threads that led to this point. If you've never played a Halo game before, this will be a great place to jump into the story", they wrote.
343 also introduced their new music supervisor Joel Yarger, whose list of credits includes the likes of God of War and Uncharted, and Curtis Schweitzer, who did all the composing in Discover Hope and music in Halo Infinite.
