The organizers of the Gamescom fair found themselves in an awkward situation when awarding the best games by platform. For the Nintendo Switch console, they didn't get enough entries for the prize to even exist.
Gamescom gives awards for the best games by platform and genre, but only for games that are physically present at Gamescom.
Since PlayStation and Nintendo have often bypassed Gamescom in the last few years, the situation is such that the best games for PlayStation and Nintendo platforms are chosen without the presence of Sony and Nintendo games.
Gamescom traditionally awards the best games across various platforms and genres, but the catch is that only games physically present at the event are eligible. In recent years, both PlayStation and Nintendo have often skipped Gamescom, leading to somewhat questionable selections for the best games on these platforms.
This year, however, the situation has reached a point where the award for the best Nintendo game will be omitted entirely. This year, the situation has become so problematic that for the first time in 13 years, Gamescom will not award the best game on a Nintendo console.
The reason for this is that Gamescom organizers did not receive enough entries for that category. In translation - since Nintendo isn't exhibiting at Gamescom, their Nintendo Switch console doesn't have enough other games to warrant an award. Therefore, the entire category was eventually abolished.
The Switch will have a good selection of Nintendo games this fall, including The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree and Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood. However, besides those titles, the offer is very poor.
