Bethesda have published another developer blog post that details some of the combat changes Fallout 76 will see in the future. Essentially, these are quality of life changes so the combat will not feel as clunky as it did up until now.
One of the first changes will be the addition of floating damage numbers that will offer more clarity into how much damage players are actually dealing, potentially helping them out with choosing the correct builds, weapons and bonuses. On the other hand, it is bound to take away from the immersion. Bethesda folks seem to have thought about this already so the feature will be optional and will be turned off by default.
Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 have both suffered from clunky weapon holstering and switching that could cause players to die in combat because the animations were so drawn out. With the update deployed, players will be able to cancel these animations now, giving the players with quick reflexes an opportunity to defend themselves if they tried to switch a weapon or holstered it at the wrong moment.
Another animation cancel change will be related to sprinting. There will be no more delay after firing a weapon so players will be able to immediately start sprinting after discharging their firearm. Furthermore, running out of bullets will no longer lock them in the reload animation - it will be possible to cancel it by sprinting.
Aiming with handguns and scoped weapons will be a bit better as well. Animations for both categories have been sped up so quick scoping could potentially become a thing in Appalachian adventures. It will be interesting to see if the quick new animations will inspire players to organise quickdraw duels at high noon.
Players should be a bit more accurate with heavy weapons now as a number of them received targetting reticles. This includes all Gatling weapons except for Gatling Laser. Interestingly enough, Bethesda mentioned the Minigun on its own even though it's technically a Gatling weapon as well.
The rest of the weapons with brand new reticles are Broadsider, .50 Cal Machinegun, Fat Man, Harpoon Gun, Auto Grenade Launcher and Paddle Ball.
