The Epic Games Store has been making waves for some time now, no Subnautica pun intended, although their focus has been strictly on PCs. The official announcement, however, also included a 2019 time frame for other relevant platforms.

At the time , Epic said that their store's presence on PCs and Macs will "open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019."

Interestingly, the company's announcement doesn't mention iOS by name, the reasons of which can be deduced from some interviews with Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney. He said that their plans were to have the Epic Games Store out on iOS in 2019 but that this doesn't comply with Apple's policies.

There's no doubt that Epic are facing another Sony-grade obstacle in Apple, although you could argue that their chances are even slimmer this time around. After all, Apple are hardly the champions of openness when it comes to matters concerning their own platform.

On the other hand, Sweeney insisted that PCs, smartphones and other general purpose computing devices should be open to competition from different stores, which would simply make him a firm proponent of an antitrust mindset.

When viewed in this light, it seems it's not a matter of whether the mobile market will see its own Epic disruption, but when, provided they play their cards right. Could the maker of Fortnite hit two for two, in the category of long-thought-impossible gardening feats?

When it comes to Epic Games Store's Android launch, it doesn't seem to be nearly as problematic as the company's Apple dealings, although Sweeney refrained from commenting further. Replying to enquiries about any progress they've made so far, the company said that it's too early to be discussing this matter.

If we were to speculate, we'd say we won't be seeing the Epic Games Store on Android before the second half of 2019, at the earliest. When it comes to Apple, however, it's difficult to say and it may greatly depend on just how determined Sweeney and Co end up being.
