We've got to admit that seeing EA and free in a single sentence isn't something you see everyday, which is just one more reason why FIFA 18's free World Cup update is so special. Nobody will believe you in a few years anyway, right?

The free FIFA 18 World Cup update lands on 29 May 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xboxo One and Nintendo Switch. It brings all the 32 qualified national teams, all of the 12 official stadiums, digitally spit-shined match balls and just like in real life - corrupt referees with questionable decisions.

Players will be able to play the new FIFA 18 modes, like the regular World Cup in Russia and in case you're still bitter over your favourites not having qualified for the World Cup, then you can quench your footballing thirst by leading them to glory nevertheless. This means you can still play with the World Cup dropouts Italy, USA, Netherlands, Chile and a few more.

EA said the FIFA 18 update holds "some of the most iconic players from the tournament's history" and the Chemistry System was tweaked to prioritise nationalities and confederations as key components in chemistry matchmaking.

FIFA 18 World Cup has updated squads and player ratings to match the current player rosters. Note that the ratings are subject to slight changes on the account of Dynamic Items, which EA say will be updated with "performances of players who stood out on matchday".

Of course, players can have a go at FIFA 18 World Cup's offline singleplayer, online Tournament and Draft as well as Squad Building Challenges.

EA has in the past either charged for World Cup updates or simply pushed them out as a full game, which of course rarely worked out well. For players, not for EA, I'm sure they've earned their yachts in the meantime.

All in all, the FIFA 18 World Cup update is a pretty unexpected gift and seeing as how the actual World Cup is fast approaching, there's no need to look a gift horse in the mouth.
