Bethesda’s Doom VFR initially didn't work with Oculus Rift. One day after the game launched, Valve deployed an update to fix the issue. Doom VFR currently works on the SteamVR Beta branch.

Bethesda’s Doom VFR launched yesterday for the PSVR and Vive. Usually, SteamVR games like this one intrinsically support the Rift, even if not explicitly designed for it. Doom VFR does not. Which brings us here.

Questions about Rift support were dodged by Bethesda in the past, which made the situation very unclear. Players were left wondering if the studio would take any active steps to prevent the game from working with the Rift. The concerns were founded in the fact that there is some significant legal dispute between Oculus and Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax.

When Doom VFR launched on Steam, several reports from Rift users poured in saying that the game would automatically shut down after being launched. The earlier concerns were all but confirmed.

Then, 24 hours later, Valve deployed an update to the SteamVR Beta branch which fixed the issue and enabled Rift users to play Doom VFR. Here are the extensive patch notes:

The SteamVR Beta has been updated with the following change.

  • General:

Added placeholder hidden area mesh for Rift users as a work around for Doom VFR and other titles experiencing launch issues.

The patch is only available on the SteamVR Beta branch for the moment. It should carry over into the main branch in a day or two, but if you are not that patient you can switch to SteamVR Beta. You do that by following these easy steps:

  • Launch Steam
  • Browse to Library > Tools
  • Search for ‘SteamVR’
  • Right-click ‘SteamVR’ > Properties
  • Click ‘Betas’ Tab > Switch beta drop-down selection to ‘beta – SteamVR Beta Update’
  • Close Properties window, SteamVR Beta will download automatically

Piece of VR cake.
