Children of Morta is a new hack 'n' slash roguelike that heavily emphasises family mechanics and is driven by the story. The game developed by Dead Mage and published by 11 bit studios has officially released on PC, both on Steam and GOG.

Children of Morta's name refers to Mountain Morta and the Bergson family. As Corruption seeps into the world, the mountain acts as a barricade that keeps the other regions safe from its influence. While a mountain itself is a great natural barrier, it wouldn't be that much of a blockade if it didn't have stalwart defenders.

Those defenders, or the mountain's children, are the Bergsons. They are a family that has ordinary everyday lives which should provide players with relatable protagonists. The characters have different abilities but they all benefit from combating the evil.

Considering there are strong family ties in the game, it's probably more enjoyable to play it out with a friend or even a family member due. Local co-op is already available but online co-op is not here yet. Dead Mage did state this feature will arrive at a later point in time via an update.

Children of Morta is available on PC currently but there are plans for console versions as well. Steam and GOG are the places to go if you are looking for some quality family time, virtual or otherwise. The game costs $21.99 / €2199 / £18.49, depending on your residence.

Just about anyone with a PC should be able to run this roguelike since the graphics are pixel art and the requirements are not high. A 2.8 GHz dual-core CPU, GTX 660/ R7 370 and 4GB RAM should suffice according to the system requirements on Steam. Children of Morta will take up a grand total of 2GB of your disk space.

The game had 92 per cent positive reviews on Steam at the time of writing with those who didn't like it mostly citing underwhelming combat as the reason. On the other side of the spectrum is the story that is enduring heaps of praise being thrown at it.
