Developers and publishers pushed their own launchers to the point where them running on top of Steam became the norm. This will not be the case with Apex Legends though, as the games will be able to run through Steam alone.
When EA and Steam announced their partnership, many wondered what approach the companies would take when it comes to multi-launcher games. All EA games normally go through Origin so playing them on through Steam would theoretically mean both launchers need to be up and running.
However, in a Reddit thread about Apex Legends' upcoming launch on Steam, Respawn Entertainment staff took a moment to dispel this assumption. While fans were discussing the crossplay capabilities of Apex Legends, one Redditor wrote that the feature is already confirmed while another partially disputed that claim by saying that Origin would need to run in the background anyway.
This is where a Respawn Entertainment , stating that Apex Legends would actually run with Steam alone, without having to launch Origin at all. While somewhat unexpected, this way of handling the game is certainly more user-friendly than having to run two launchers at the same time.
EA are technically no strangers to their games running without Origin. While Mass Effect 2 launched before the service went life, it was never updated to require Origin. Even the bonuses for signing in to Cerberus Network work properly without using any sort of a launcher.
Neither EA nor Respawn commented on how the other games from EA's catalogue will be handled on Steam but if Apex can run without Origin, there is no reason to believe others cannot. Right?
