Animal Crossing: New Horizons has had a March to remember as Nintendo's game was not only the best-selling game - its launch month established it as an absolute giant.
According to the latest figures from market research firm NPD, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best-selling game of March 2020 and the second best-selling game of 2020 in general.
Moreover, its launch month sales, which include both physical dollar and unit sales, are the third-highest sales in Nintendo's tracked history, which is quite the statement for the seemingly whimsical title.
Not many titles in Nintendo's stable can compete with these results, and the fact that it's beaten all Mario and Zelda titles is an even bigger statement.
Currently, only 2018's Super Smash Bros Ultimate and 2008's Super Smash Bros are ahead in terms of higher physical software sales in their respective launch months. Needless to say, Animal Crossing has found itself in the absolute top of Nintendo's offer.
That's not the end though, as analyst Mat Piscatella wrote, "Launch month dollar sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons have exceeded the lifetime sales of all other Animal Crossing franchise games, making Animal Crossing: New Horizons the best-selling game in franchise history."
Funnily enough, NPD's report even points at the fact that everyone seems to be talking about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, regardless of the social network or your social circles, and they couldn't be more right.
It's safe to assume that social isolation has had an effect on Animal Crossing: New Horizons' popularity, but it's clearly not the deciding factor. Nintendo, on the other hand, may want to think how their two most influential franchises found themselves behind.
