Revenge of the Savage Planet is big, vibrant and charming playground that feels like a love letter to the fans of this franchise.

Earlier this week, Raccoon Logic, the developers behind Revenge of the Savage Planet, were kind enough to invite us to a 45-minute gameplay preview of their upcoming action-adventure game.

In case you're not familiar with Revenge of the Savage Planet, it's a sequel to 2020's Journey to the Savage Planet, a funny little indie with an abundance of charm and soul.

Now, in the hands of the newly formed Raccoon Logic, the franchise is set for a big comeback with a new release on the way that will allow you to play in co-op or solo and also supports crossplay across all platforms.

During the hands-off preview event, we got to see gameplay from two out of the game's four planets. One of the planets was a lush and vibrant jungle biome while the other was a desert planet. Both looked gorgeous with highly detailed environments and nice lighting that made the colours really pop.

The devs showcased a highly customisable character with different outfits, outfit colours and more. The game also features a big upgrade tree, allowing you to improve your character, weapons and gadgets.

In terms of gameplay, Revenge of the Savage Planet comes with an RPG flavour with heaps of quests that you can track in a neat quest log. The game will let you explore the world in your own fashion and from what we got to see, there's plenty to discover.

The zones don't look massive but are still sizeable and have plenty of verticality. One thing I particularly liked were the map obstacles that prevent you from reaching some locations on the map. One of these obstacles was a poisonous fog, that you can clear by crafting a filtration system. Raccoon Logic told us that every level is designed to encourage exploration off the beaten path.

Revenge of the Savage Planet also comes with a wide variety of enemy types and each of these has weak spots that you can hit for a stagger effect, allowing you to capture their DNA, which you can then use to research new stuff.

From what we've seen in the preview, movement is very fluid with sprinting, sliding and jumping mechanics, making the combat fast-paced and dynamic. It looked pretty responsive but until we get to play it, It's hard to make a definitive statement on how the game feels to play.

Raccoon Logic also confirmed to us that Revenge of the Savage Planet runs on the latest version of Unreal Engine 5. The game is locked to 30 FPS on consoles and won't have a 60 FPS performance mode on launch.

The story will be around 15 hours long so a completionist playthrough will take you well over 20 hours.

In a nutshell, Revenge of the Savage Planet looks really fun and I'm certainly eager to try it once it releases next year. While it may not be my most anticipated game, I'm willing to give it a go as there's plenty of stuff here that I liked.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is coming in May 2025 to PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
