Endless debates persist about the paramount importance of quality gameplay, impressive graphics, or a compelling story in a video game. We assert that, for a game to meet its standards, each element should, at the very least, receive a satisfactory rating.
However, we can all agree that, no matter how good the other segments of a video game are, if it doesn't have good gameplay, it's not complete and won't appeal to players.
In this article, we'll highlight what we consider to be the top five games in 2023, with a focus on quality gameplay. Some titles that surprised even us when announced have made it to this list, and we're pleased to share it with you. Take a look at our compilation.
The games with the best gameplay in 2023
1. Remnant 2
Remnant 2 stands out as one of the most enjoyable games released in 2023, primarily due to its unique blend of genres. It seamlessly combines third-person shooter mechanics with elements reminiscent of Souls-like games, creating an almost perfect gaming experience.
Alongside these characteristics, Remnant 2 places significant emphasis on exploration, with developers highlighting the discovery of intricate secrets within secrets inside the game, as we've personally witnessed. The game boasts high-quality encounters, featuring exceptional level design and challenging bosses and mini-bosses.
Moreover, with dynamically generated levels, the game strives to offer a variety of experiences, ensuring incredible replay value. Check out our article, where we elaborate on why Remnant 2 could be a contender for Game of the Year (GOTY).
2. Blasphemous 2
The beauty of Blasphemous 2 lies in its simple yet effective and engaging gameplay, among other things. I've lost count of the hours I've spent playing this metroidvania gem from Team 17 and The Game Kitchen.
In my review, I've praised the introduction of three different weapons, that come with distinct weapon skills and executions. The smooth platforming mechanics are another thing where Blasphemous 2 excels at. The cheery on top of the cake is incredible enemy variety and stunning boss design and boss fights.
All these come together to create a truly exceptional gameplay experience that puts Blasphemous 2 on our list of games with the best gameplay in 2023.
3. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is a game that singularly prioritises good gameplay. It evokes the essence of the initial games we experienced about three decades ago, where you receive a mission briefing and proceed to carry out that mission. The gameplay, as challenging as it may be, is equally enjoyable. In this mech-based game, you engage in battles against both regular enemies and formidable bosses. Accumulating earnings allows you to enhance and upgrade your mech.
The allure of the gameplay lies in the fact that certain bosses can prove to be highly challenging; nevertheless, equipping the mech with the right arsenal can make defeating them relatively straightforward. The sense of satisfaction upon achieving success is unparalleled.
Ultimately, considering the fact that From Software is the developer of this game, you can expect the level of quality that precedes their renowned reputation.
4. Diablo 4
Anyone familiar with the gaming scene recognises the esteemed reputation the Diablo series holds in the gaming community. This classic action RPG promises numerous hours of high-quality entertainment, be it through its engaging story or its multiplayer mode.
In addition to that, the inclusion of five distinct classes, each offering a completely different gaming experience, significantly boosts the game's replay value. Furthermore, the expansive game map is filled with random encounters, numerous dungeons, and various boss locations, making the exploration of the map genuinely intriguing.
The gameplay itself is remarkably smooth, and it's best described as addictive because boredom never seems to set in. Activision Blizzard, once again, demonstrates their expertise in crafting action RPG games, showcasing their unparalleled mastery in the field.
5. Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen offers a genuine Souls-like experience that mirrors the essence of the Dark Souls games we've come to adore. Its resemblance to the key elements of the Dark Souls series is evident across all aspects, providing a comprehensive and immersive Souls-like encounter.
The excellent design of the dark fantasy world in Lords of the Fallen, coupled with intricately crafted bosses and a high level of difficulty, contributes to making the gameplay of this game genuinely exceptional.
Additionally, when we factor in the parallel world of the dead, Umbral, that we consistently traverse throughout the game—whether intentionally or after facing defeat, which incidentally is both perilous and eerie—we are presented with one of the finest Souls-like experiences, not just in 2023 but for a considerable time.
