In the rest of this article, discover the five games that, according to our editors' assessment, distinguished themselves from others in terms of their captivating visual presentation and overall graphic expression.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - The exploration is on another level
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is without doubt the best-looking game of 2023

Since the initial announcement of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the revelation that Ubisoft would be developing it, expectations were high, particularly in terms of graphics. I can confidently affirm that Ubisoft has indeed met, if not exceeded, those expectations in this aspect.

The Pandora depicted in James Cameron's Avatar films left a lasting impression on both TV and cinema screens. However, Ubisoft's rendition of Pandora in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a whole new level of awe-inspiring. The game is so visually stunning that it feels like it could come to life. Every inch of the map is adorned with lush vegetation and vibrant colours, complemented by the incorporation of impressive graphic effects. It's truly a feast for the eyes in every sense of the word.

Indeed, there were numerous visually stunning games this year, but Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora unequivocally stands out as the most beautiful among them.

2. Alan Wake 2

Another visual delight is presented by Remedy Entertainment, and it's none other than the phenomenal Alan Wake 2. This sequel to the 2010 original surpasses its predecessor in every aspect, with graphics being a particularly standout feature.

The graphic portrayal in Alan Wake 2 is truly extraordinary, particularly evident at the game's outset when it immerses us in the investigation of the initial murder within a coniferous forest. The realism is so striking that distinguishing between in-engine graphics and live video becomes quite challenging during several segments of the game. Alan Wake 2 seamlessly blends these elements, showcasing remarkably realistic and impressive graphics.

A special commendation is due for the graphical portrayal of the Dark Place in Alan Wake 2. Despite its eerie atmosphere, the depiction is so captivating that you might find yourself lingering in it simply to admire its beauty.

3. Lords of the Fallen

Dark fantasy games often oscillate between extremes, either captivating or visually unbearable. Fortunately, Lords of the Fallen firmly falls into the former category. Currently, there is no game on the market that rivals its stunning world and exceptional graphics within the realm of dark fantasy.

Examining the overall graphical presentation of Lords of the Fallen reveals a genuine next-gen Souls-like experience. Whether traversing expansive toxic swamps, navigating a blazing city, or trekking through frigid snowy meadows, each environment is meticulously and captivatingly rendered. The graphics in this game are so stunning that they have the power to truly mesmerise and leave a lasting impression. Lords of the Fallen stands as a visual masterpiece, captivating players with its breathtaking beauty.

4. Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Despite Spider-Man 2 being somewhat disappointing in various aspects, it appears that Insomniac truly took a conservative approach to its design. However, when it comes to the graphical presentation, they undeniably excelled.

Although the character models may not be notably impressive and might even appear to be a downgrade from the preceding two games, the depiction of New York is nothing short of breathtaking. While New York was already stunning in the first two Spider-Man games, it is undoubtedly twice as beautiful and intricately detailed in the current installment.

The level of detail experienced while swinging through New York is truly remarkable. Each building boasts reflective surfaces with active ray-traced reflections, creating an impressive and beautiful visual experience. The vegetation in Central Park is particularly fantastic, reaching a point where it becomes challenging to distinguish between real-time New York and rendered game sequences. It's truly fascinating, and Insomniac deserves commendation for their exceptional work.

5. Hi-Fi Rush

Tango Gameworks, Bethesda and Xbox blew us away by shadow-dropping their rhythm action adventure Hi-Fi Rush earlier this year. Scoring a clean score of 100 in our review, Hi-Fi Rush is one of the best titles this year in various aspects, including the visual presentation.

Hi-Fi Rush combines comic book art-style graphics with 3D design, resulting in stunning characters, animations, effects and the world. The visuals of Hi-Fi Rush are colourful, vibrant and full of life at every corner and we could never get enough of it.
