The gaming world has witnessed a surge in popularity for the Souls-like genre, a phenomenon that emerged spontaneously. Following the resounding success of the initial Dark Souls and its subsequent sequels, numerous developers started replicating the formula of these action-adventures. This formula, marked by its simplicity alongside challenging and demanding gameplay, has become a hallmark of the genre.
Souls-like games are fundamentally defined by distinctive features: unforgiving difficulty that punishes mistakes, combat that is both straightforward and meticulously precise, the presence of camps, healing items, the resetting of both healing items and enemies, hub areas, a multitude of mobs, and challenging boss encounters, among other elements.
In the previous year, the Game of the Year accolades were claimed by the Souls-like game Elden Ring. However, this year, although that trend hasn't continued, a plethora of exceptionally high-quality Souls-like titles has been released. In this article, we will share our humble opinion as we rank these games.
Souls-likes of 2023 ranked
1. Lords of the Fallen
In 2023, gamers were treated to an authentic Next-Gen Souls-like experience, basically the fourth installment of the Dark Souls series, differing only in title and by developers, of course. This game stands as a genuine masterpiece within the Souls genre, boasting an awe-inspiring dark fantasy design and a world that is bound to captivate and astound players.
Given the near-identical gameplay found in most Souls-like games, Lords of the Fallen stands out by introducing two distinct realms—the world of the living and the world of the dead—both of which players navigate simultaneously. The portrayal of the world of the dead is so hauntingly vivid that it leaves a truly indelible impression.
2. Lies of P
Lies of P stands out as an exceptional Souls-like game, featuring gameplay that surpasses the difficulty of any similar title I've encountered. While many mechanics align with other games in the genre, the unique twist lies in both the protagonist and enemies being puppets, resulting in mechanised movements that add a layer of complexity. This peculiarity, combined with an exceptionally narrow parry and dodge window, contributes to making Lies of P an intensely challenging gaming experience.
Conversely, the game's world and locales are mesmerising. The dilapidated city of Krat, overrun by puppets, is a hauntingly beautiful landscape filled with horrors. Undoubtedly, it stands as one of the finest Souls-like environments ever crafted.
3. Remnant 2
While not a traditional Souls-like title, Remnant 2 adopts numerous core mechanics from these games, earning its classification as a Souls-like experience. Despite its exceptional quality, the game didn't gain as much recognition among players, possibly due to a slightly less effective marketing campaign.
Presenting a third-person shooter experience, Remnant 2 boasts a captivating, dynamically evolving world. Featuring beautifully crafted locations, engaging bosses, and seamless co-op gameplay, it stands out as one of the premier exploration games. The title offers an extensive array of discoveries, including hidden secrets, diverse weapons, and concealed archetypes, making it a standout in the genre.
4. Blasphemous 2
Once more, diverging from the classic Souls-like mould, this title adopts a 2D format with platformer traits. Nevertheless, by incorporating Souls-like mechanics, it rightfully earns its place within the genre.
Our reviewer, Semir Omerovic, was so impressed by the quality of Blasphemous 2 that he awarded it a perfect score of 100/100. Undeniably, it stands as an exceptionally high-quality game, featuring intriguing and challenging gameplay along with a compelling story. However, in the realm of Souls-like games, it doesn't rank as high simply because all highly ranked games on this list in this genre still hold the title for superior gaming experiences.
5. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor both is and isn't a Souls-like game, and the distinction lies in its mechanics. While the game incorporates all the typical features found in other Souls-like titles, the inclusion of difficulty levels undermines the characteristic Souls-like challenge. This aspect transforms the experience into a breezy stroll in the park, especially in the easy difficulty setting.
This specific aspect significantly contributes to its lower ranking. However, should you opt for a genuine Souls experience, engaging with the game on its highest difficulty setting is strongly recommended; it's far from easy. Beyond this, the game boasts impressive quality, and recent updates addressing numerous bugs enhance its overall playability, making it a truly worthwhile experience.
6. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
Closing out the list and likely the least impressive among all the games is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. While it does deliver a genuine Souls-like experience with challenging gameplay, it falls short in other aspects, lacking standout features.
Set in China, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty unfolds a narrative around a mysterious war that entangles the player. The gameplay is marked by a perplexing experience, characterized by a thoroughly vague storyline. While the locations and graphics lack notable distinction, the game's standout feature lies in its commendable boss fights.
And there you have it—these six Souls-like titles shine as the best from the past year. While there were a few more releases, they don't quite merit mention. In our assessment, these six games defined the previous year, and if 2024 follows suit, Souls-like enthusiasts have ample reason to celebrate.
