Housemarque

Housemarque is a Finnish video game developer based in Helsinki, founded in July 1995 by Ilari Kuittinen and Harri Tikkanen through the merger of their two studios, Bloodhouse and Terramarque, both of which were established in 1993 as Finland's first commercial game developers. The studio holds the distinction of being the oldest active game developer in Finland, founded just months before fellow Helsinki studio Remedy Entertainment. Housemarque built its early reputation on arcade-style shooters and bullet-hell games, including Super Stardust HD (2007), Dead Nation (2010), Resogun (2013), Alienation (2016), Nex Machina (2017), and Matterfall (2017), with the majority developed exclusively for PlayStation consoles. In June 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Housemarque, making it the 13th studio to join PlayStation Studios.

The studio's pivot to AAA development culminated in Returnal, released for PlayStation 5 in April 2021, a third-person bullet-hell roguelike that earned widespread critical acclaim and was later ported to PC in February 2023. Returnal's success cemented Housemarque's transition from downloadable arcade titles to larger-scale productions and directly led to Sony's acquisition. The studio now has around 110 employees and is working on Saros, its next PlayStation 5 exclusive, launching on 30 April 2026.
