Gearbox's recent invitation to 'Celebration of Togetherness' made many a player think that Borderlands 3 is getting cross-play from launch, but it turned out to be a trigger-happy trailer to the tune of 'So Happy Together' by The Turtles.
Gearbox's CEO Randy Pitchford already refuted this rumour, tweeting, "Some folks may be speculating that this thing tomorrow may be about cross-play. Tomorrow's thing is awesome, but not about cross-play."
In spite of this, many were still hopeful that Pitchford and Co could pull a cross-play surprise for Borderlands 3, but as you can see, it was about the new trailer.
And to be fair, Pitchford wasn't lying when he said that the thing is awesome, and Gearbox are keeping up the tradition of quirky and gorgeous trailers for Borderlands 3.
The trailer is all about dancing and blowing heads off, a combination that somehow feels quite at home in Borderlands 3, with a special focus on co-op, which has traditionally been the best way to experience Gearbox's looter shooter extraordinaire.
Add to that the excellent tune So Happy Together and you've got yourself a trailer that would easily give Disney's Be Our Guest a run for its money. No, not the remade one.
Gearbox have recently shown off Borderlands 3's pinging and duelling, and even though the game introduces dedicated loot, i.e. everyone gets their own, duel lovers will still be able to duke it out against one another.
The game's pinging system was built similarly to Respawn Entertainment's excellent system in Apex Legends, which lets you ping enemies, loot, environmental hazards and even Claptrap in a simple, straightforward manner.
You can check out the specifics of Borderlands 3's pinging system in Gearbox's presentation on the above link.
As for cross-play, that Celebration of Togetherness will have to wait a bit more, and Pitchford said they'll be working hard to implement it on all platforms, as soon as practicable.
Note, however, that he referred to the post-launch period, and we think it's safe to say it's not exactly their immediate priority.
