XCOM 2 is getting a big expansion. The expansion will bring three aliens known as Chosen. The aliens are on the hunt for knowledge and each of them will have their own resistance group tasked with defeating them.

Firaxis announced a big XCOM 2 expansion at E3 2017. The announcement promised "new environments, new enemies and new XCOM forces". The expansion is called "War of the Chosen" and there are three of them: the Hunter, the Assassin and the Warlock.

For every Chosen, there is a resistance group: Reapers, Skirmishers and Templars. They are apparently amazing at what they do, and would be even more efficient if they were to work together. But, of course, they hate each other. Because why not.

Where do you, the player, fit into all of this? Well, by working with a resistance group, you earn their favour, and in return, you get the best soldiers in the game. Resistance heroes. More on them later.

The new environments will include the abandoned cities of Xcom 2. They are fully inhabited with humans who have turned into zombie-like mutants that attack everything within earshot. The mutants don't discriminate either, and they will sink their teeth into your allies and your foes. It's all the same to them.

Other new features include new soldiers, new abilities and new gear among a whole host of other things. This expansion is going to be big.

The Chosen, their fight mechanics and strategies were inspired by the nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor, and then tailored to fit Xcom 2.

The alien Chosen will be on the hunt for "knowledge". Aren't we all, but since they are aliens, they have a couple of different ways of acquiring said knowledge. One way they go about their objective is by capturing your fellow soldiers and probably probing them for information.

The more information they accumulate, the more dangerous for you and your Avenger they become, as their final objective is your ship and the XCOM project onboard. If they get enough "knowledge" you'll have to escape their BFG in order to save yourself and the project. If not, they will turn up at the end of the game to make your life that much harder to save.

Remember the resistance groups? Each of them has their sights set on a particular Chosen. You could say they chose their Chosen. I'll stop. You'll send your own soldiers to help out these factions and you'll get leads on the Chosen along with strategic orders and resistance soldiers for hire in return.

Resistance heroes have some crazy abilities: Skirmisher heroes are super quick, an ability that can come in handy for doing multiple actions in one turn; One lower level Reaper skill keeps the hero invisible even when they fire while stealth is active; Templars can gain the ability to clone themselves using a corpse from the battlefield. These skills only improve as the heroes level up.

Your run-of-the-mill soldiers won't feel too bad, as they will have options for upgrades as well. Perfectly executing a tactical move grants the soldier some points, and there's even a training facility for everyone looking to up their game. Even powered up, your run-of-the-mill soldiers should not be used in each and every battle as they can also develop some negative traits.

Like in real life, the soldiers will form bonds with each other, and those bonds will grant you some advantage on the battlefield. The bonded soldiers will help each other, and can even end up shooting at the same target, or completing a task well before anyone else. Will they also be devastated if one of them dies? We'll see what happens on 29 August which is the release date set for The War Of The Chosen.

You can get Xcom 2 for Xbox One , find the PlayStation 4 version right , and if you want to play the game on your PC, here's a link to . The game is on sale for all platforms, at the time of writing.
