In the game, players take on the mantle of the witcher Geralt of Rivia for the third time. Witchers are supernatural hunters capable of amazing feats of strength and agility, and are employed by the local populace to take care of any problem they seem to have. Most of those problems turn out to be monsters which are inspired by Slavic mythology in the game's universe.

Two expansion packs were released for the game, the first of which was Hearts of Stone followed by Blood and Wine. Both of the expansions were well received both by players and critics.
