Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has recently discussed the initiatives for unionisation of the video game industry, claiming that the fact there are more video game job openings than there are workers doesn't really help here.
There's been plenty of talk on the issue of industry unionisation, albeit it had to come to Activision Blizzard's record revenues and celebratory laying off of of their workforce for people to start taking notice.
Zelnick, however, thinks that unions were traditionally a result of non-existent labour relations, which is definitely not the case with the video game industry.
"Typically unions have been most beneficial when there were more workers than there were jobs. And where the jobs were low-paying jobs. We have fewer workers than we have jobs, and they're high-paying jobs", he told GamesIndustry.
Zelnick stressed that Take-Two currently have 500 open positions, citing a figure of 220,000 people employed in the US video game business.
"They make about $100,000 on average, maybe more. It's hard to imagine what would motivate that crew to unionize", he added.
Of course, that's not to say that Take-Two would shy away from their legal responsibilities should it come to unionisation, and Zelnick reiterated that in no uncertain terms.
"But we're a compliant company and will serve the law. If our colleagues want to engage in collective bargaining, then we will", he said.
Zelnick also touched upon E3 and the fact that the likes of Sony, Activision and EA were either absent or had a smaller presence than in earlier years.
"To be clear, we're here because the show works. We create great press opportunities. We create great opportunities for investors, great opportunities for analysts, great opportunities for retailers and distributors worldwide. And frankly, our team also gathers together and that's nice. I think it's very beneficial. I'm a little astonished that not everyone sees it that way", he said.
