First cross-play and now this. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has finally confirmed what everyone could have already assumed without breaking a mental sweat - the PlayStation 4 will have a successor and Sony are already working on it.
Speaking to the , Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware".
That is pretty much the entire extent of what was said on the matter and will undoubtedly fuel a speculation whirlwind strong enough to carry the vastest of fanboys all the way to E3 2019.
The CEO declined naming the next-gen console a "PlayStation 5", but there is little doubt that the PlayStation name will be involved in one way or another, even if it's not a straight continuation of the by now close to 25 year old numbering trend.
With Sony recently buckling for the first time on cross-play with Fortnite, and Microsoft dropping hints about "multiple consoles" being planned for the next-generation, it was high time that the Japanese electronics hydra finally brought any kind of word on the future of their console line.
This year's E3 made it clear that a number of major AAA releases will most likely be counting on next-gen hardware in order do run with any degree of satisfaction on consoles.
Cyberpunk 2077 was demoed on a PC that would blow any current-gen console out of the water without dropping a frame, in spite of CDPR insisting that they are targeting the current console generation as far as specs go, and Bethesda's Elder Scrolls 6 has been pretty much confirmed to arrive well after Cyberpunk starts selling in GOTY packages.

Everything UbiSoft have shown of Beyond Good and Evil 2 also suggests that it will be a next-gen affair more likely than not. Alternatively, it might just be another instance of UbiSoft preparing to blow our minds with a sneaky visual downgrade in the time between E3 and the official release. Just for old times' sake.
