Ys Net, the developer of action adventure Shenmue 3, have been facing some criticism over the game's switch to the Epic Games Store, which left some of their Kickstarter backers fuming. In their latest post, they said they'll look into it.
To make matters even worse, the decision to switch to Epic Store was made in cooperation with Deep Silver, whose experience in milking Steam preorders to the last minute and then making the switch is quite formidable.
Granted, the switcheroo they did with Metro Exodus was made a few weeks before launch, whereas Shenmue 3 did it with less than six months left on the clock.
However, where Shenmue 3 differs significantly is that it was a Kickstarter backed game that was funded well before the Epic Games Store existed, so backers were left thinking they'll get to enjoy the game on Steam.
Add to that the fact that Shenmue 3 was delayed more times than the Armageddon and the decision by Deep Silver and Ys Net, which includes physical copies as well, becomes a controversial one.
Ys Net now wrote that they're aware of the controversy and that they'll be looking into it soon.
"We want to make sure that the Backers are aware that we are listening to their concerns. We kindly ask all our fans to have some patience, we are currently at E3 demoing the game and need to get back to our respective offices to assess the situation and together find a way forward to justify the trust you placed in us", they wrote in their most recent Kickstarter update.
At least they didn't notify their customers via Steam this time, which is what they did the last time and then had to weather a barrage of insults, which were probably well weighed considering the audacity by Ys Net and Deep Silver to continue using Steam for its reach.
Before you mistake this for an anti-Epic move, let me make it clear that yours truly considers the Epic Games Store's importance to the gaming industry to be Steam 2.0, but ethically questionable practices Deep Silver keep pulling before running to Sweeney and Co's arms are definitely not helping their image.
