Sega's Sonic Mania has only launched in August 2017 and the company's already preparing a "remake". The name's Sonic Mania Plus and it comes with a new mode called the Encore Mode and two additional playable characters.
The characters in question are Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirell. You may recall the characters, or not, due to them going missing in Sonic games recently and can only be found in the Sonic games from the 1990s.
Sonic Mania Plus comes with an Encore Mode, although Sega's attempts to describe it was in terms of "new way to experience the game" and "a really new visual touch". They did mention it will be a nice way to experience different zones, but it's still guesswork at this point.
Sega announced Sonic Mania Plus on South By Southwest 2018 panel, where they said they've been taken aback by the amount of fans requesting physical copies of last year's Sonic Mania.
Indeed, if you're one of them, Sega's got you covered as the company claims they've spent months working on packaging, trying to make sure it's just right.
There will be an exclusive holographic slip cover, Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive branded sleeve, 32 page art book with concept art and pretty much everything you'd find in a retro package.
Sonic Mania Plus comes out in Summer 2018 with physical copies priced at $29.99, which should satisfy anyone's retro cravings.
I mean making a game that emulates past games, then remaking it is enough to make anyone's ethical compass go mad. Not Sega's, of course, because I don't really think they've got one.
