Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate has shared a few bits of info on the game's direction in 2019 and Rare's swashbuckling adventure will be getting a new and improved PvE quest system, as well as the Arena mode, and quite soon.
Neate said that while some players found Sea of Thieves' current systems to be inspiring, as the quest system only gives gentle nudges towards creating your own adventures, others found it to be far from what they expected.
Rare are under no illusions that for the players who wanted guided goals, more lore and more story felt like they were underserved. "But we’ve proven that we can do it and that it works in the shared world with campaigns we’ve done around the Hungering Deep or Cursed Sails where you put lore, put story in", he said.
Nevertheless, Sea of Thieves' team never gave up on trying to appease both camps. "We’ve had a team working on basically a new and improved quest system around story and lore in this shared world for quite a while now actually, and it was originally planned to be our fourth update, but we actually moved it back to next year because we wanted to add and grow", Neate added.
Rare are quite confident that once the new quest system is in place, the second Sea of Thieves camp should be firmly onboard. Neate said, "I think when we bring that into the game, it's gonna appeal to those people that want that crafted lore, want that adventure, want that story, adn also appealing to maybe single players as well. You know, those players that want to go out and maybe they want to live a story, maybe they don’t want to be that social."

Many Sea of Thieves players are looking forward to The Arena as well, which according to Neate is coming very soon. "We’re playtesting Arena. We want to get it into our Pioneers community program early in the new year, so we are just trying to nail down that almost MVP of an experience", he said.
