Upcoming changes to Teamfight Tactics will see Riot Games fine-tuning some gameplay elements. Lead developer Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer took to X(Twitter) to discuss upcoming changes related to unlocks within TFT.
Players have noted problems since the most recent TFT set released related to stringent unlock requirements. Players have to unlock certain compositions through specific early game triggers or units pre-built around certain champions. Patch 16.6 will help ease some of that difficulty.
Unlock Requirements Becoming More Flexible
Mortdog explains that they aim to retain a small requirement while allowing players to freely go after their desired builds. There will be no longer massive difficult conditions early game, they will just be simple and reliable.
Some examples they gave are:
- Darius: Draven buys 1 Gold - Draven buys 1 item
- Nidalee: Two 2-star Neekos - Level 7 and Neeko with 3 items
- Rift Herald: Void is up for 8 combats - Void is up for 2 combats and Level 7
- Veigar: Any unit with two Deathcaps - Yordle with a Deathcap
Essentially what they're doing is taking away huge luck-based early combinations and replacing them with something more tied to a reliable condition.
Community Reaction and Meta Impact
Players have had varied reactions to the announcement. Some have praised the change stating that oppressive RNG based unlocks can gate off entire playstyles before the game begins.
More lenient triggers would enable players to better strategize and naturally transition into late game team fights. Others believe that having unique requirements to unlock certain champions gives each composition flavor and diversity.
Some fear that if they are too easily accomplished, many compositions will feel copied in design. We will have to wait for the full patch preview to drop for more information.
