When you originally created your Riot Games account, you were prompted to select a Riot ID. This is the distinctive display name that you employ across all Riot-published games. However, in League of Legends, you had the freedom to choose a distinct Summoner Name, separate from your Riot ID.
This distinction between Riot ID and Summoner Name will soon become a thing of the past. Riot is shifting towards unifying your gaming identity under the Riot ID. They appear to be moving toward a unified moniker, ensuring players are recognized by a single name in all their games, akin to the system employed in VALORANT.
The change to Riot ID support for Teamfight Tactics was unveiled on the PBE server. And here's what we know so far.
Teamfight Tactics embraces Riot ID
According to SkinSpotlights, Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is embracing Riot ID. Consequently, you will no longer be tethered to the same name you use in League of Legends.
You've likely observed that all Riot-published games, excluding League of Legends, employ the Riot ID as your in-game name. However, due to TFT's integration with the League of Legends infrastructure, you were compelled to adopt the Summoner Name. This is set to change, liberating TFT players from the constraints of their Summoner Name.
Adjusting your display name in Teamfight Tactics
Changing your Summoner Name in the client typically requires 1300 RP (Riot Points) or 13,900 BE (Blue Essence). RP usually involves a financial transaction, so the only cost-free method of altering your display name is by using Blue Essence.
However, once Teamfight Tactics incorporates Riot ID support, you'll encounter a change: you will need to wait for 30 days before modifying your in-game name. This means you won't have the freedom to frequently alter your on-screen moniker as before.
Anticipated release date
While Riot Games hasn't provided a specific date for when this transition will take effect, it's probable that it will be rolled out in patch 13.21. We can anticipate this change following thorough testing on the Teamfight Tactics PBE.
