There is something genuinely special about a small indie studio dropping an announcement that stops you in your tracks, and that is exactly what Digital Sun have done here with ReVamp.
When the art style first appeared, and it became clear you were playing as Dracula in a 2D side-scrolling gothic setting, I immediately thought - ah, it's another soulslike metroidvania (not that I'd be complaining). That is what the visual language suggests, that is what the genre conventions would predict, and that is precisely what makes the actual gameplay reveal so disarming.
It is a castle-defense roguelite. A proper one, with room-building, minion management, and wave-based sieges. The reaction is difficult to describe as anything other than a genuine double-take, and then almost immediately, a quiet realisation that this might actually be far more interesting for it.
Build, defend, and personally intervene
The castle-building system sits at the heart of ReVamp. You'll be able to construct and reconfigure your fortress room by room across more than 100 different room layouts, shaping enemy paths and battlefield flow to funnel waves of barbarians, knights, priests, crusaders and everyone else coming to stick a stake into Dracula's heart, into increasingly elaborate death traps.
As already mentioned, you play as Dracula, cursed by the moon goddess Achlys and bound to an eternal war fought in pursuit of a long-lost love. Each moonrise resets the siege, but blood spilt in battle fuels permanent progression, meaning every cycle leaves your castle more formidable and your arsenal more devastating than the last.
When the defences start to buckle, Dracula himself enters the fray, dashing through corridors and unleashing blood-fuelled abilities to turn the tide. It's a mix of tower defense, action game, and the combination looks like it could be genuinely special.
The minion roster is impressively varied, too, stretching across more than 40 types, including werewolves, chimaeras, harpies, wyverns, and wendigos, all deployed strategically to stalk the halls and hold back the onslaught.
When can you play ReVamp?
ReVamp is coming to PC via Steam, with community playtests planned in the coming months. No release date has been announced yet, but Digital Sun are inviting players to join their Discord to stay across upcoming playtest opportunities.
