The fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 is making a killing for Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive is no news but the latter's financial report says that by selling 17 million copies, the game outsold its predecessor in just eight days.
Red Dead Redemption launched back in May 2010 so it's slightly over 8 years old. Having sold upwards of 15 million units, it's no slouch in the sales department but Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't come to compete - it came to set the bar it seems.
Red Dead Redemption 2's launch was so eagerly anticipated that it became the most lucrative opening weekend for an entertainment product ever, pocketing in the process. It managed to blow Avengers: Infinity War out of the water and while it's not very scientific to compare a ticket to a $59.99 game, there it is.
Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the fact and added that Red Dead Redemption 2 was "the label's first game built from the ground up for the current console generation". The company's second quarter performance and "outstanding early results from Red Dead Redemption 2" mean that they've raised their financial outlook for the fiscal year 2019.
Take-Two's report lists several other achievements, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 being the biggest entertainment launch of 2018. Even though the title of the best launch performance across three days goes to Grand Theft Auto, we're sure neither Rockstar nor Take-Two are shedding any tears.
It seems like Red Dead Redemption 2 did particularly well on PlayStation 4, having broken three records for Sony. Arthur Morgan's story is the game with most pre-orders, biggest day one sales and biggest three-day sales on PlayStation Network ever.
Of course, it wouldn't be Rockstar if there wasn't for some controversy over its titles, and Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't seem to be an exception to the rule. This time around though it's not about prostitutes, it's about sufragettes that you can kill in-game but I'm really not sure whether they realise it's just a game.
