Obsidian Entertainment had plans for console versions of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire before the studio was bought out by Microsoft and it seems the plans have not been shelved. It will come to PS4, Xbox One and Switch in 2019.
Obsidian Entertainment initially had intentions to release Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and even Nintendo Switch before the game didn't meet sales expectations and pushed the studio to the edge of the abyss. When Microsoft bought Obsidian out, the doubts about console version became even stronger, but this has recently been debunked in a blog post about Deadfire's latest DLC, The Forgotten Sanctum.
The developers outlined all the new features and content in The Forgotten Sanctum, and then announced that PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions will arrive in 2019. According to Obsidian, Grip Digital are still hard at work to deliver the port to consoles, just as originally planned.
This marks another big title by Obisidan that will make it to Xbox One's rival, PlayStation 4, aside from The Outer Worlds. No official clarification was announced on whether Microsoft could change anything about the plans to release these two games on all mainstream platforms.
Blocking PlayStation from getting The Outer Worlds could prove tricky as Private Division is still the publisher, but Microsoft has all the publishing rights for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire and they still didn't block the Switch and PS4 ports.
This course of action is likely to garner goodwill for the company as players have shown major issues in the cross-play war between PS4, Switch and Xbox One that was mostly driven by Sony. Console ports of Deadfire are a step forward to removing barriers for players based on which console brand they purchased, but it remains to be seen whether Microsoft will stick to this path or not.
Considering the bulk of developers the company acquired in 2018, it's still highly likely we will see many Windows / Xbox One exclusives in the near future.
