Red Barrels originally set out to deliver an unprecedented horror game, but they probably never imagined someone would beat the game in slightly more than 10 minutes. To add insult to injury, AcrohTheBeast completed it blindfolded.
What do you do when you are presented with a horror game where you can't defend yourself? You put on a blindfold, of course. Speedrunner AcrohTheBeast broke the world record for an Outlast speed run, as he completed the game in 10 minutes, 24 seconds. Well, he broke the record for doing it blindfolded.
There are only two speedrunners in that though, the other one being SFCPudding, but the difference between them is vast as the latter managed the blindfolded run in one hour, 16 minutes, 42 seconds. When it comes to overall speedrunning, the world record holder is the aptly named HorrorDoesSpeedRuns, with nine minutes, seven seconds.
When compared to the , Acroh's run would be placed at 117th spot. On that note, he does have a faster run when not doing it blindly, sitting at #22 with a run that lasted nine minutes 19 seconds. Some people would be hard-pressed to simply finish the game as it doesn't really offer any proper means of defence, with the player usually only relying on their camera for better visibility.
On the bright side, when you're blindfolded, jump scares shouldn't be as effective, right? Well, I would have a hard time avoiding every possible wall if I played it blindfolded, for one.
Anyway, should you decide to try Outlast for yourself or even attempt to get good enough to run through it blindfolded, now would be a good time to pick the game up as it is on an 80 per cent discount on both Steam and GOG, with the latter having the advantage of DRM-less games.
In either store, Outlast will set you back $3,99 / €3,99 / £2.99 and possibly a few years of life as its jump scares are sure not for the faint of heart.
