Metro 2039 has been revealed by 4A Games and Deep Silver. The first official screenshots of what’s next from the gritty post-apocalyptic franchise have been released.
After years of anticipation and hoping from rumors fans finally have confirmation that another Metro game is happening and that it’s headed in a new direction while still remaining faithful to the series’ dark tone. The announcement was made live during an Xbox First Look showcase. Along with some new information on the story, fans were treated to a brief gameplay teaser.
While fans had a good idea of what to expect from the title thanks to earlier rumors, we now have confirmation and can see just what Metro 2039 will be all about when it releases later this year.
New Story, Characters and Gameplay Systems
This next installment in the Metro series focuses on a new voiced lead that players will take control of named the Stranger. As described by the team, he finds himself returning to the Metro after previously swearing he would never return.
This creates an opportunity to dive into his personal story as he grapples with his decision as well as what’s going on in the Metro itself. But fans of the series shouldn’t worry, familiar characters like Hunter will be back. It was recently revealed that Hunter is still alive and is now the leader of the Novoreich.
Instead of traditional dialogue there will be a new gameplay mechanic called Frozen Stories. As players traverse the world of Metro 2039 they will discover what took place at points of interest by examining the environment.
Currently, Metro 2039 is set to release Winter of 2026 and is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
