MSI 2023 has concluded the play-in stage and the subsequent draw to determine the opponents in the main event, with the results looking pretty bleak for the western teams.

League of Legends esports scene is dominated by Korean and Chinese teams but every once in a while, the western teams manage to go through and shake things up.

However, it hasn't happened for a few years and the best hope they had this time around was to face another western team in the beginning.

It was not meant to be and all four matchups will be east vs west in Riot's second-biggest event of the year.

MSI 2023 bracket stage draw

  • GEN vs G2
  • MAD vs T1
  • C9 vs BLG
  • JDG vs GG

G2 fought tooth and nail to go through the play-in stage, only to face LCK's first seed in bracket. Granted, anything can happen but we are sure they hoped for a different opponent here.

MAD Lions are matched up against LCK's second seed, although it is hardly a consolation as T1 is easily one of the strongest teams around now.

It has been four years since a western team won an MSI tournament

Cloud 9 will possibly have the best matchup out of all the western teams as BLG didn't manage to sweep LCS' second seed in the play-in stage.

GG will be facing JDG in the fourth matchup, leaving the American team with one of the hardest matchups they could think of.

Teams that lose their first matchup will go to the lower bracket where they have to keep winning or get sent to the airport. The gap between eastern and western teams in the past few seasons seems to have grown so at least we will get to see a few more matches thanks to the new format.
