Upcoming Aurora adjustments in Patch 14.23 explained

Riot Games is releasing updates to Aurora in League of Legends Patch 14.23 to make her more fun and accessible.

Riot Games is rolling out a load of updates to Aurora in League of Legends Patch 14.23: the devs are trying their best to make her more fun and accessible.

Since its release earlier this year, Aurora was actually doing pretty well, though with many ups and downs in terms of buffs and nerfs.

Now, Riot is targeting her very steep learning curve-particularly at the lower levels of play-to make Aurora a more evened character at all levels of skill. Let's break down the details.

Key changes to Aurora's abilities

Passive - Spirit Abjuration

  • Aurora's passive no longer grants movement speed. It is now tied to the W ability. Riot felt the old movement speed boost was inconsistant and too hard for players to optimize.

Q (Thin Line Hex)

  • Aurora's Q is now going to auto recast itself, in case it times out without her retriggering it. That was intended for her at launch but then ended up getting cut in post-testing. Q cooldown's increased to 9-7 seconds as the range gets bumped from 850 to 900 with increased base damage.

W - Across the Veil

  • Riot has made casting W easier by adding a 20-40% movement speed boost, but it will no longer reset on takedowns. While this may limit aggressive chaining, players will more than likely benefit from its more streamlined design and reduced cooldown at 16-12 seconds.

E (The Weirding)

  • Riot slightly increased the range of E from 800 to 850 with the modification to her mobility.

Ultimate (R) - Between Worlds

  • Rather than imprisoning, Aurora's R would slow opponents exiting its area of effect, granting a wider window of 2-4 seconds to strategically control. This adjustment would give Aurora's R more breadth in usage and a feel that skill is rewarded.

Riot's design goals for Aurora

These changes will affect most ranks, particularly those with casual and mid-skill players, according to Blake, the lead designer.

Aurora in general has a very high skill floor that simply has discouraged many players, and Riot wants her to be enjoyed and practical for most players, from the low to the high ELOs.

They want to make sure she is not just good in pro play but is a balanced choice for everyday matches in League of Legends.

Release date

These changes will hit with Patch 14.23 on November 20, 2024, during regular maintenance hours.

Riot's changes to Aurora are a testament to the fact that the developer continues to put in effort to ensure champions stay fair and fun, improving League of Legends for every player.
