Early 2026 will see Riot release a large League of Legends Mel update, as they hope to decrease the frustration many feel while keeping her playstyle intact as an explosive mage. The large rework will focus on bringing clarity, counterplay, and fairplay to her kit which players have long complained about.
Riot won’t require us all to dodge bans and instead will be focusing on clear telegraphs, adjusted damage distribution, and making her defensive utilities easier to read. Here is a comprehensive list of every known change coming to Mel, along with some insight on how this will affect the meta.
Mel Rework Overview – What’s Changing in 2026
Mel’s rework focuses on three main objectives:
- Reducing unavoidable damage
- Increasing ability clarity
- Deprioritizing early Q max in low-risk situations
Mel will maintain her zoning and disable potential but enemies will be able to punish mistakes more easily.
Base Stats
To even out scaling and eliminate statistical outliers, Riot decided to rework Mel’s attack speed scaling:
- Attack Speed Ratio: 0.4 → 0.625 (buff)
This change allows items to play better on her while no longer requiring massive amounts of base.
Passive – Overwhelm
Overwhelm was significantly tuned down to reduce its consistency and burst strength.
Highlights:
- Projectile damage reduced by ~50%
- Total damage per cast reduced
- Enemies will no longer visibly receive passive marks when marked by enemies
- Fixed bugs dealing damage to unintended units
Damage:
- Projectile Damage: 8–50 + 5% AP → 8–25 + 3% AP
- Damage per Cast: 24–150 + 15% AP → 24–75 + 9% AP
- Overwhelm is less clutchable as a source of free damage.
Q – Radiant Volley
Radiant Volley now has better counterplay at longer ranges. You’ll be able to max Q first more often.
Nerfs:
- Increased cast time
- Decreased projectile speed
- Decreased explosion radius and range spread
- Damage changed to damage-over-time AoE effect (walls better synergize with Arcane Comet)
Buffs:
- Decreased channel time
- Reduced mana cost at higher levels
- Increased damage to minions to 100%
- Radiant Volley now does a new damage calculation with a stronger initial hit.
New Damage:
- Base: 55–155 + 50% AP
- Tick Damage: 5–9 + 5% AP
- Total Damage: 85–245 + 75–95% AP
Ability now scales better with landing skillshots rather than stacking unavoidable hits.
W – Rebuttal
Rebuttal recieved one of the largest reworks for the Mel rework.
Highlights:
- No longer grants immunity to all damage
- Now grants a scaling shield instead
- Projectiles are destroyed instead of reflected if they’re in an AoE ability
- Movement speed bonus was buffed significantly
Shield:
80–200 + 60% AP
Movement Speed:
- 30% → 40%
- Duration increased to 1.5 seconds
This change prevents many unintuitive reflect situations while maintaining Rebuttal’s strength as a defensive cooldown.
E – Solar Snare
Solar Snare sees a few tuning changes which help reduce unintuitive CC while rewarding good landing hits more.
Nerfs:
- Missile radius decreased
- Linger duration decreased
- Damage over time hitbox decreased
- Ever so slightly decreased cast range
Buffs:
- Projectile speed increased
- Root duration changed to a consistent 1.5 seconds
- Increased base damage and DoT damage
- Fixed visual bugs where ability would clip into terrain
- Solar Snare will now be easier to read from but feel better when you land it.
Will the Mel Rework Ruin the Meta?
The Mel rework is likely to:
- Lower her overall ban rate by a large margin
- Reward players more for skillful positioning/playmaking
- Take a slight power downtick from passive baked damage and outright immunity
- Reward players who look for trades more than those who play safely
All in all, Mel should still be a strong mid laner but she’ll require more correct play to properly punish mobile champions.
Mel Rework Coming Soon
The Mel Rework will be releasing on February 4, 2026 with the next patch of League of Legends.
