Riot Games has announced upcoming changes to the ranked system in League of Legends for Split 2. They aim to improve the progression system, reduce frustration during the climb, and enhance the overall experience for players of all ranks.

The next Split in League of Legends Ranked play is approaching quickly! Riot Games has announced all the upcoming changes to the ranked experience for Split 2, beginning May 15. The updates aim to improve the progression system, minimise frustration during the climb, and enhance the overall experience for all players, regardless of rank. It sounds promising so far.

Riot Games previously tackled the problem of negative LP gains, especially in the Emerald to Master tiers, which were affected by Demotion protection.

During the first split of 2024, they implemented several changes in Ranked games to address this issue. These included correcting placement inconsistencies and balancing LP gains and losses. According to a developer report, these adjustments significantly reduced the occurrence of negative LP gains.

Why is Riot making these changes to Ranked?

These updates aim to mitigate issues like negative LP gain. As part of this effort, the developers have increased the highest rank a player can achieve after completing their placements. Previously, Emerald I was the top placement; now it's been extended to Diamond III.

The developers believe this change will enable players to reach their true rank more quickly on their main account, reducing the incentive to play on new or "smurf" accounts. Additionally, the developers have announced new measures to penalise players who engage in such behaviour.

Ranked Placement Changes

  • The highest rank you can achieve after provisional matches has been increased from Emerald I to Diamond III.
  • Steps are being taken to detect and respond to manipulative practices.

Demotion System Changes

Demotions between divisions will now be more gradual, with LP shifting smoothly between them.Demotions between tiers will still have some safeguards, with players dropping to 25, 50, or 75 LP, depending on their real skill level. In cases of significant misplacement, demotions will happen more rapidly to ensure players reach their correct rank efficiently.

Besides these changes, the developers will also try to balance on-role vs off-role play, improve seeding for new LoL players, address alt account issues, and update queue times. Another major addition to League of Legends is the return of Master Duo Queue.
