Henry Cavill says having a home like Amazon will give him the freedom to be true to the lore and massive scope of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise.
It's been quite the month for the Hollywood star and favourite actor among PC gamers, Henry Cavill. After announcing that he'll no longer play Geralt in Netflix's The Witcher series and won't be returning as Superman in James Gunn's upcoming DC superhero film, Cavill officially confirmed that he's set to star in Amazon's Warhammer 40,000 series .
In an Instagram post , Cavill revealed how delighted he is to finally have the chance to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life. Interestingly, Cavill also took the opportunity to have a slight dig at The Witcher series, saying how Amazon will allow him the freedom to stay true to the Warhammer source material.
"Having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer," Cavill wrote in the post.
There's growing speculation across social media that one of the reasons for Cavill's departure from The Witcher is the friction between him and The Witcher‘s production team. Cavill confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2021 that he was committed to continuing portraying Geralt as long as they stay true to author Andrzej Sapkowski's work.
Netflix's The Witcher series has been heavily criticised for straying away from the source material, especially in the second season, where the showrunners completely ignored the Blood of Elves novel, added new characters that don't exist in the books, and changed the personality and traits of many characters including Geralt.
Former The Witcher producer Beau DeMayo also revealed that some writers actively disliked the books and CD Projekt Red's games. "I've been on show - namely Witcher - where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material)," DeMayo explained.
Being a huge fan of the series, especially the games, Cavill probably decided it was for the best to leave the project before things got even more heated. Given that he just got a gig for another franchise he's mad about, we'd say it was a pretty good decision.
Everyone who follows Henry Cavill on his social media channels knows that the guy is an absolute nerd for all things Warhammer 40,000. He regularly spends time painting his miniatures and doesn't miss a chance to talk about his love for the franchise, even when speaking to Hollywood reporters that don't have a clue about it.
Recently, he got to visit Games Workshop’s Warhammer World in the UK and hang around with the team while sipping some tasty coffee and checking out all those cool figures. Like a child on a Christmas morning.
All in all, Warhammer 40,000 fans will certainly be ecstatic to hear that their favourite franchise is in such good hands and we don't have any doubts that Cavill will do a great job if given the support he needs.
On the other hand, almost 300,000 The Witcher fans have signed a petition to Netflix, asking them to keep Henry Cavill as Geralt and sack the writers instead. We doubt that will happen but it clearly shows what the community wants and how displeased they are with recent events.
