Day of Dragons video game got a Kickstarter funding page days before Niantic launched a similarly named Harry Potter Wizards Unite event. Google then stepped in and caused the best chain mistake video gaming industry will witness in 2019.
Day of Dragons is a video game in its early infancy as the developers submitted the funding campaign on Kickstarter with the beginning of October 2019. It has, however, seen one of the best baby showers ever, which will result in a story many will retell due to its sheer awesomeness.
As it happens, Niantic folks were about to release an event for Harry Potter Wizards Unite bearing the same name so a mix up was bound to happen one way or another. Google made sure it happened in spectacular fashion though as the search engine propelled the Kickstarter page to the top of search results.
Therefore, anyone searching for the Harry Potter event was exposed to the funding page of a game about survival as a dragon. Turns out, it was a lot of people because the funding skyrocketed and Beawesome Games were caught unprepared for the spike. The studio originally set a $12,000 funding goal that was almost reached in the first four days of the campaign with over $10,000 pledged already.
The fifth day was when 7 October 2019 when the Harry Potter event started and pledges just started pouring in for Day of Dragons. According to the campaign tracker , this day more than doubled pledged funds and the crazy influx of money just kept going up. At the time of writing, the campaign stood at $533,938.
In a plot twist that came out of nowhere, Niantic and Google accidentally caused what will probably turn out to be the best mess of 2019 for the gaming industry.
