The video games industry overtook video to become the Uk's biggest entertainment sector as long ago as 2013 when sales reached £2.3bn. In 2020, revenues exceeded £4.2bn.
Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) have released a report regarding entertainment industry growth during the lockdown in the United Kingdom (UK). In the report, ERA reveal some interesting facts about the gaming industry as well.
According to the report, the gaming market has overtaken the video to become the UK's biggest entertainment sector since 2013, when the sales reached £2.3bn. The report also states that the gaming industry revenue reached £4.2bn, a leap of 14.5 per cent on 2019, and the first time it has breached the £4bn threshold.
The digital games business seen the biggest rise - by 16.3 per cent to £3.6bn. This includes the direct purchase of digital games, subscriptions, downloadable content. The digital games business was worth more than the entire video market and twice as much as the music market.
The best selling game of 2020, according to the data was FIFA 21 with more than 2 million sales. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Grand Theft Auto V are following closely in second and third, respectively. Here's the full top ten list:
