Sports Interactive officially cancelled Football Manager 25, with studio and publisher SEGA choosing to channel its resources towards the development of the next title in the series.
The decision comes in light of development setbacks, particularly in terms of providing meaningful technical and graphical enhancements over its previous releases.
Initially planned for a launch in November 2024, and then pushed to a launch in March 2025, the title did not meet the studio’s standards.
In a statement, Sports Interactive explained that despite wanting to make the largest jump in the series' history, development for the title encountered unplanned complications that stalled it from reaching its desired level of quality.
“Every delay was intended to push the game towards our level,” added the studio. “But when we hit critical development milestones, it became clear that even with more time, the game wasn't going to make it.”
While they have developed in many areas, playtesting revealed that overall experience and UI weren't polished enough for a launch.
The studio confirmed that even though their new direction is strong, more time is needed in order to deliver according to player expectations.
Moving forward, development will then follow with creating a new big Football Manager title, one that will maintain high standards for the series.
Football Manager 25 was initially scheduled to make a big transition to the Unity platform, but with its cancelation, all approved retailer pre-orders will have a full refund.
